European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
